Message from Director

Since inception of Uttarakhand Council for Biotechnology (UCB) in 2014, it’s providing an enabling ecosystem to foster the biotechnology based research and improve capacity building across Uttarakhand state. Through various initiatives towards promoting cutting edge-research and innovation, empowering farmers, supporting public-private partnership, UCB has made a huge impact on agriculture, healthcare, industry.  In 2019, Uttarakhand Biotechnology Policy (2018-23) has been promulgated by Hon’ble Chief Minister Sh. Trivendra Singh Rawat. This policy will be a key player for accelerating the entrepreneurship and other biotechnology activities within the community, and mass of Uttarakhand state. Uttarakhand Biotechnology Policy will be a landmark for creating Uttarakhand as an organic state by using bio-fertilizers and bio-pesticides; like the other state.

The UCB has achieved several milestones since its inception. Some of its accomplishments include Tissue Culture of high altitude specific Kiwi fruit and its distribution to famers of Uttarakhand state. Department has also developed the Tissue Culture protocols for other specific plants of Uttarakhand. UCB’s activities are driven by highly motivated scientist with excellent academic backgrounds, pursuing high quality research in the field of Molecular Biology & Nanotechnology, Bioanalytical Research, and Bioinformatics leading to publications in reputed peer-reviewed international journals. The Centre of Excellence for Mountain Biology (CEMB) of the council promotes the R&D activities and biotechnology based agriculture along with short term training program for the youth and farmers of the state.

In order to translate research into products and services by providing necessary infrastructure support, UCB is looking for establish a world class Biotech Park in the state. Hon’ble Chief Minister of Govt. of Uttarakhand has also shown a keen interest to establish a Biotech Park in the state on priority basis. The proposed Biotech Park in state will offer facilities to Scientists, and Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) for technology incubation and transfer and pilot plant studies for accelerated commercial development of Biotechnology.

The department has a long term Vision and Mission to guide its activities. Its governing body and scientific advisory committee play a crucial role in enabling the department to achieve its goals.
