Message from Director

Uttarakhand Council for Biotechnology since its inception in Feb 2003, has been providing an enabling ecosystem to promote biotechnological education research and development across the country and preparing nursery of innovative ideas for further sustainable growth. UCB and Uttarakhand state government have laid considerable emphasis on accelerating
commercialization of biotechnology in state. To support this idea, Uttarakhand
Biotechnology policy 2018-2023 was approved. In this policy council has structured its programmes in such a way that it strengthens the institutional mechanisms for empowering sustainable innovation and growth.

In tandem with the aim of the government to enhance the income and socioeconomic status of farmers, UCB chalked out many research programmes that align with the state priority areas. Council is also developing and maintaining hi-tech nurseries of various plants viz. kiwi, apple, plum, peach, persimmon, mushrooms etc. to meet the requirement of quality planting material for cultivation and better income generation. Council aims to serve the farmers in a better manner in next coming years. In current scenario practical education is must to survive. “One/forty five days/ Six months skill development programme” is a flagship scheme of our council with an objective to enable youth to take up industry relevant skill trainings that will help them in securing a better livelihood. Supporting and stimulating basic R & D/seminars/conferences etc. in emerging areas of biotechnology is another distinctive mandate of our council. Council provides funding opportunities to strengthen R & D activities and to bring in researchers from under-represented regions & weaker and marginalized segments of the societies to the mainstream.

In organizations, cooperation and networking amongst the competent bodies are important to establish and to promote interactions. There has been a paradigm shift in the relationship
between Government, Academia, Industry and stake holders in recent times; therefore, council is laying more emphasis on fruitful national and international collaborations with prestigious institutes/universities having synergistic activities to nurture the biotechnological ecosystems in state.

Hence, I warmly encourage the learners, researchers, scientists, farmers, and stakeholders to be associated with the council to get huge benefits from council activities.

Prof (Dr) Sanjay Kumar
